Window-shopping in uppity Newport mall I case women cinched in Versace diamond-studded belts. Their slender frames, nip-tucked facades, painstakingly framed by sunset-color wigs sway like papyrus flowered heads uplifted by Gucci stiletto boots. But it is their fingers, ringed with 5-carat diamonds that I most notice while sarcastically muttering to myself all they are good for is cutting glass. (the diamond that is, not the fingers)
