It's only an 8mb download too because the guy who hacked the gimp to make it took all the extraneous (sp?) files out. You can get it info here: blog.yumdap.net/archives/...ndows.html It's photoshop like unlike the gimp 2.2 which isn't. I guess it depends on what you are used to using. I don't have photoshop but would love to buy it, one day :)

I am finding the adjustment to paintshop pro rather hard though. How long have you been using it?

I have the trial v. of 9, but I havent decided if I like it or not yet... biggest problem with it is that it doesn't recognize some of my older filters... and i'm a filter junky!

I'm back now though. Hi again Wulfepup, Gimp have a few filters only they aren't called that - they are called scriptfu. I have a plan though, well a plan in the making :)

I'll likely switch back and forth using each program for their strong points... If only there was a common image format that preserved layer information... but I suppose that is asking too much... If they could read each others layer info, they'd be able to do the same things, and there'd be no use in switching back and forth, or buying more than one...

Does paintshop pro degrade the images when saving as jpg do you think? I have paintshoppro 9 here on a trial and I'm trying to decide whether to buy it or not, if it's as strong as photoshop I can leave that purchase for later on. I learned graphic design on a work computer with photoshop and am finding the differences between photoshop and paintshop pro rather challenging and am wondering if I'll adjust to it's different ways. Just for your info - you can save an image as a psd in paintshop pro - take it into gimp and it keeps the layer info. You can then edit the text in gimp and save it as a psdagain and re open it in paintshop pro - again with the layer info preserved. Not that that will probably be useful to you now you have photoshop CS :) I would so like to get the hang of gimp and save any costs all together - I'm really into open source software - empowerment to the ppl I say, hehe.

I will have to give it a try. As far as Paintshop pro goes its a great program I started with version8 and now I use 9. I love the auto features that this program has. Now I have Paintshop7 and thats what I have been useing mostly now ( and still learning) . Ray ps if anyone has tips on how to make boarders in paintshop I wouls love the help. PaintPro makes it easy to make boarders but I would like to try it with Paintshop as well.

I've been using Picture It and I have not seen it mentioned! Is it because it's not considered to be that great? Are these programs mentioned here better then Picture It. Here's the deal, I just don't get it. I have this photo that I absolutely adore, but in the background there are a few telephone poles! I installed Adobe illustrator, but that did not help, so that's why I reinstalled Adobe CS. I tried and tried to get rid of these things, but you can tell and the area's texture is different. Here is the photo: It was done in some really poor conditions, but I think it could be a beauty. I also have a few that I'd like to change the background on, but can't figure it out. Ray, I know you know. Help?

Now my trial versions of everything else have run out I've had to download The Gimp 2.2. I am amazed. How can this software possibly be completely free? Being open source it is a bit like a camel with too many humps, but so far I've only found one thing in which it falls below Photoshop and that is a missing Displace filter. Maybe I just haven't found the way of doing it yet. Mikey

I can't afford either. Maybe the point where Photoshop and Fireworks really score is the possibility for higher productivity, although the latest Corel Photopaint seems to have taken care of that one. I need a new computer battery so my clock isn't coping too well with Corel's try out system at the moment. There latest V13 or x3 as they call it might be worth a 30 day trial. Mikey

It is more like photoshop than like the Corel painter. Haven't worked with Gimp so far. Try it out, there is a 30 days trial period: Photoline32 It is not free, costs for new users 59.- Euros, but it is worth the money.

First of all it is under 8MB so my 8mbs connection downloads it in a few finger flicks. The quite suddenly with no fuss it is installed. I'm in a good mood already. It is surprising comprehensive and well laid out. The only things I'm really missing are the possibility of Channel Chops and 3D mapping, that is except for the Button Maker. In fact the Button Maker with rollover code and vectors with good type control is making it look like Macromedia Fireworks plus. If it has a compression engine is as good as Fireworks then it has to be a bargain. Would I buy it? It doesn't have quite the same professional pzazz as Photoshop with Image Ready, or even The Gimp. If I were making money from graphics then the tax deductable spend for Photoshop wouldn't bother me. Now I'm at the other end of the market altogether and have to think before buying a tube of paint maybe I'll stay with old Corel 7 and The Gimp. Mike
